14 June 2008 St Lukes ‘A’ v Hook & Southborough ‘A’ (League) – Home
Another bright and sunny afternoon with the outfield at Deckers looking green and inviting but all the attention was on how the pitch might play given the criticism of the previous week. At least H&S could not claim any disadvantage since they share the Deckers ground with St Lukes. Nevertheless a good toss to win which Hemant – skipper for the day – did and promptly put H&S in to bat.
H&S started cautiously taking only 3 runs off the first 5 overs but then started to lose wickets regularly in trying to push the scoring along. Evan was bowling accurately from the ‘garden centre’ end and was virtually unplayable (finishing with 10-7-3-4), while Bob was costly by his own standards (9-2-28-2). There were some gremlins in the pitch which made playing back risky but this should not overshadow some excellent bowling. With H&S on 35-6 the skipper brought himself on to clean up the tail with good change of pace and flight (3.4-0-9-3). Ahmed picked up the other wicket (2-0-7-1) and H&S succumbed to 50 all out.

A quick change around following a ‘calls to arms’ from the skipper and St Lukes set off in reply. The early loss of Richard S and John B showed the need for care but Richard B (20 not out) and Shoukat (14 not out) – “what’s all the fuss about, where’s the bar?” – took St Lukes’ home with plenty to spare.

Final mention for the teas which were excellent.
Man of the match – Evan, excellent contained bowling, good change of pace and use of the pitch.
