St Luke’s
continue ruthless streak with win over the old enemy.
On a windswept day, Surrey Seamers came to town and it’s a game we had been looking forward to for a few weeks. Over the last few years it has been one win each and all games going down to the wire in some exciting and tense affairs. We were ready and up for the game early and were more fired up by the opposition strolling onto the field 15 mins late having decided to put them into bat on a dodgy looking wicket.
With a very strong cross wind it was going to take extra effort from the bowlers and the 1st few overs from JC and Heynes produced little until Heynes found his line and clean bowled there opening batsman. From then Surrey Seamers were on the back foot and after some comedy fielding the runs dried up and the opposition tried to play across the line, which resulted on further wickets for Heynes and backed up at the other end by the ever-consistent JC. With Heynes bowling aggressive and straight Surrey Seamers were left at 50 for 5 off 20 overs.
Many times we have let opposition off the hook during the mid sessions while bowling and things were looking worrying for a while when they reached 80 for 5 but with Robin and Karl chipping in with a few wickets it was left to Heynes to come back into the attack and take there last wicket and Surrey Seamers were all out for 99.
Heynes produced career best figures for St Luke’s of 5 for 14 off 8 overs.
Matt Heynes 8.4 2 14 5 0 0
Jason Custance 10 0 33 1 0 0
Karl Quinn 6 0 17 1 0 0
Robin Ford 5 1 13 1 0 0
TIM BLATT 1 0 2 0 0 0
We know when we play Surrey Seamers aggressive cricket will be played without crossing the line of conduct so it was important that we stayed focused and bat well at the start if we were going to win on a dodgy wicket.
Surrey Seamers started aggressively and tried to intimate Mikey and Karl in the early stages with some good bowling, however Karl who was clearly in no mood to hang around took it to the bowlers early with some confident batting and an outrageous flick of the legs for six which nearly killed the large crowd of 5 people who turned up to watch. Supported by Mikey (aka Geoffrey Boycott) we notched up 34 in a matter of 5 overs before Mikey fell to a ball which kept lower than expected and was clean bowled (edited by Jason, he said “Played on”.)
Karl continued the fast pace tonking the ball to all parts of the boundary with solid support from Hardwicke. A mix up in the middle left Karl being ran out for 37, a potential slip up was never in our minds as Hardwicke and Charlie saw the match home. Charlie smashing a superb cover drive to see St Luke’s home to a ruthless 8-wicket victory.
Its not often we have won a game by 5.10pm on a Saturday and that’s 2 convincing wins on the trot. With a number of players unavailable for the next few games its will be others who will need to “step up to the plate” that will determine whether we can have a real push for promotion or mid table domination again.
