St Lukes 1XI v Selsdon Saturday 7 June.

Reported by Charlie Hillman (no one was made to sweat in the writing of this report)

On the back of a defeat the previous week it was important that St Lukes bounced back. A number of regulars were away including Captain Ed, so “Gentleman” Tim Hazlehurst stepped in as skipper along with Evan from the Scooby Doos and Matt “the Cobbler” Cobb who was playing his first game for a while.

The sun was out, the crowd was massing with Charlie Blatt making an appearance to add to the numbers.

At 1:30 the Selsdon players were scarcer than an extra cake at teatime and had 3 players so St Lukes could have claimed the toss as they didn’t have enough to start with. “Gentleman“ Tim played it straight and tossed anyway. Selsdon called wrong and St Lukes were fielding. The Gentleman then gave Selsdon a further 10 mins to see if their players would arrive and after that they had to decide to either start with 3 players (but if they lost 2 wickets before the others arrived they would technically have been bowled out) or to start losing overs until they were ready. If they had known the St Lukes attack they might have started to bat!

Eventually the rest arrived and we finally started, with Selsdon losing 8 overs. Jason kept the runs down from one end. Evan was more expensive from the other but picked up a couple of wickets. Tim Blatt and Robin came on and the runs started to flow. Tim picked up a couple of wickets (he’ll buy wickets at any cost) and by now Charlie had 2 catches and the Matt the Cobbler had one. Dusty came on and although expensive picked up 3 wickets including a good caught and bowled. Michael “Sweaty” Krishna was also thrown the ball and where Jason had bowled “economically”, Sweaty started off “comically”. The first ball of his first over went for 4 and the second went for possibly the biggest 6 seen at Deckers. I think it landed the other side of the train track. Michael pulled himself together and bowled better for a good comeback. “Skinny” Tim Craig picked up a catch behind the stumps. Selsdon were in full flow now and were playing their shots. St Lukes didn’t really have an answer and although the team were crying out for change, the “Gentleman” ignored their pleas and didn’t give Charlie a bowl. He’s not the first captain to miss this trick and he won’t be the last. At tea off their 37 overs, Selsdon finished on 204-9.

St Lukes still felt we could get the runs as we had 45 overs. “Sweaty” and Jo “what do you mean I can’t play attacking shots” Durnall started cautiously. The first wicket fell at 25 and after that a steady stream of batsmen followed without troubling the scorer a great deal. Dusty was the pick with top score of 26. St Lukes were all out for 83 off 36 overs.

A disappointing result and in summary – Selsdon looked like they wanted to win, St Lukes didn’t and when the game was going against us we didn’t have answer. This is likely to happen fairly often and the days of just turning up and winning are left behind in the lower divisions. We need to do more to change the game and if we aren’t getting wickets and change the way we play. Batting and bowling were both poor.

Man of the Match – Charlie Blatt for sitting through it.

Key lesson learned – Beware of cricketers in blue trainers, they may be able to bat after all!
